Soviet Fighter-interceptor aircraft built by Mikoyan Gurevich.

Overview

The Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-17 Fresco was a Soviet subsonic Fighter-interceptor that was developed from the previous MiG-15. The Fresco was most famously used during the Vietnam War by the North Vietnamese Air Force against the USAF, US Navy and USMC. Other operators included Egypt, Syria, Iraq, the Soviet Union and the PRC. The MiG-17 is still operated by North Korea as of 2023.

  • MiG-17 Fresco-A - First variant, had VK-1 engine.
  • MiG-17A Fresco-A - MiG-17 with VK-1A with longer lifespan.
  • MiG-17AS Fresco-A - Added unguided rockets and AA-2 Atoll.
  • MiG-17P Fresco-B - All-weather variant with RP-1 Izumrud radar.
  • MiG-17F Fresco-C - Fresco-A with VK-1F afterburning engine.
  • MiG-17PF Fresco-D - Fresco-B with RP-2 Izumrud radar and VK-1F.
  • MiG-17PM/PFU Fresco-E - Fresco-D converted to carry AA-1 Alkali.
  • Lim-5 Fresco-C - Polish built MiG-17Fs.
  • Lim-5P Fresco-D - Polish built MiG-17PFs.
  • Lim-5M Fresco-C - Polish ground attack version of MiG-17F.
  • J-4 Fresco-A - Chinese designation for imported Fresco-As.
  • J-5 Fresco-C - Originally known as Dongfeng-101, Chinese copy of MiG-17F.
  • J-5A Fresco-D - Chinese copy of MiG-17PF.
  • JJ-5 Fresco - Twin-seat variant of MiG-17, based of MiG-15UTI/JJ-2
