Area 88 (エリア88 - Eria 88) is a Japanese media air combat franchise that was originally a manga written and illustrated by Kaoru Shintani between 1979 and 1986. Between 1985 and 1986, a three part OVA series was released. In 2004, an 12 episode anime adaption was produced. The 2004 series was notable for using a Trance soundtrack for the original broadcast in Japan before being replaced by original music for DVD and international releases.
